Saw this coming when Barrett got her seat on the court. Two generations of American women have grown up in a world where Roe was settled, and of course couldn’t imagine that it could actually be taken away. I think in addition to suburban women, that younger women who haven’t been all that politically engaged may finally have been thrust into an issue that couldn’t affect them more personally, and their outrage will burn very hot. If the Repubs weren’t so hot to outdo each other in cruelty and base-whoring, they might have seen that this issue, which has been gold for them for decades, would be incredibly stupid to foul up. Here’s hoping they continue the Trumpian tradition of doubling down, and that it may prove to be their undoing.

I wish I could be so optimistic. But recent history shows that the radical right can get away with extreme positions on abortion and birth control and still gets to called “pro life” not by their supporters but by their opposition. So when the global gag rule became more extreme and the official us position under Trump was forced pregnancy for rape victims of war with no outrage or even coverage I knew that Roe was likely in serious trouble. Also the extremists lie about iuds and emergency contraception being aborticifents again without much outrage and and an oh well kind of attitude. And when a mainstream publication such as the Atlantic doesn’t think twice about hiring someone who publicly thinks it’s ok that women who have abortions are murdered (although he was not but only after intense backlash) I’m not sure about the electoral costs to eviscerating women’s rights. And let’s not forget the never ending gaslighting of women who report on these realities and are deemed “hysterical”.

I am in agreement Will. As saddened as I am for the women in TX without the means to travel, and I sincerely am, I think the R’s have done what many a young man (lacking control and experience) are all too familiar with and it will redound tenfold.

Final paragraph……just literary, direct into my veins, perfection!

In Texas I'm trying to keep a focus on Lina Hidalgo, who has provided excellent leadership throughout COVID and the big freeze ("we need to treat this like a hurricane") and gives me hope. She is just outta sight and I intend to stay in this troubled state long enough to vote for her or whoever winds up being the D nominee. Let's kick that bastard out of office!
