On the larger point, I think thee is still a lot to be explained of why some rural or low density place should be hostile to immigration or same sex marriage/trans people in the military or sympathetic to large tax reductions for high-income people. or opposed to freer trade, or against subsidizing health insurance for more people or to want to make it harder to vote, or less interested in reducing net CO2 emissions, opposed to gun safety laws, not criminalizing abortion, etc.
